Commissioning a Collectible Jewelled Object
Start with the object’s purpose, its scale and the idea you want it to express. The Algems archive includes decanters, fountain pens, jewelled boxes and phone cases. These illustrate previous work; the feasibility, function and materials of a new concept are discussed individually.
Give function a place in the brief
A display object, a writing instrument and a vessel invite different practical questions. Describe whether the object will be handled frequently, displayed in a particular setting or used for a defined purpose. Include approximate dimensions or constraints if you know them.
The archive focuses on completed designs. It does not establish every pen’s nib specification, every box’s internal dimensions or compatibility between an archived phone case and a current device. Raise these requirements early in the conversation.
Connect a motif to the object’s form
The Imperial Dragon Decanter brings a gold sculpture around a crystal vessel. The Blossom Pen carries a floral element at its cap and records a matching pendant. The Dragonfly Casket combines a carved jade lid with enamel and diamond surface decoration.
These are different placements of a motif: surrounding a vessel, completing a writing instrument or inhabiting the surface of a box. Choose references for the relationship between the object and its decoration, not only for the symbol itself.
Discuss materials and evidence separately
Share what appeals to you about gold, crystal, jade, enamel or gemstones, and distinguish those preferences from any exact material requirements. A recorded material in an earlier work does not guarantee that an equivalent piece is available for a new commission.
Historical press can help place the archive in context, but does not set a current price or confirm that a project can be reproduced. The next step is an individual discussion of scope, budget, timing and documentation with the atelier.

Can an object be discussed for a personal occasion?
Yes. Describe the occasion, the person and any motif or function that matters to you. The atelier will discuss the proposed project; no standard delivery date or design is implied.
Does Algems only work on jewellery worn on the body?
No. The archive also records decanters, writing instruments, jewelled boxes and cases. A new object concept can be raised with the atelier for an individual feasibility discussion.
