The Jade Casket

A gold casket topped by a hand-carved white jade mythical beast, the body banded with brilliant diamonds and accented with rubies and a cabochon emerald. European jewellery tradition and Asian carving meet in one object, each discipline sharpening the other. The jade figure, rendered in fine white nephrite, sits atop the lid with a quiet authority. Its surface carries the soft, waxy lustre that only patient lapidary work can produce, every curve and sinew shaped by hand. Beneath it, rows of diamonds encircle the casket in precise bands, their brightness tempered by the warmth of the gold setting and the deep colour of the rubies and emerald that punctuate the composition. Held in the palm, the casket has a considered weight and a stillness that rewards close looking. It belongs to a tradition of precious objects made not for display alone but for the private pleasure of the collector who turns it slowly in the light.
